Five Tips for Finding Lost Loot
Unclaimed money, from bank accounts to utility deposits, tax refunds, unredeemed savings bonds and pensions are but a few types of unclaimed property available to the rightful owner or heir. The first stop in locating unclaimed property should be at the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators’ website, which links to each state’s unclaimed property search. MissingMoney.com is another stop. Treasury Hunt is the U.S. Treasury Department’s unclaimed property site, and the IRS maintains a “Where’s My Refund?” website to check on missing current income tax refunds, as do individual state revenue offices. Check with the FDIC Unclaimed Funds website or The National Credit Union Administration’s Asset Management and Assistance Center’s list to find unclaimed bank or credit union assets. Unpaid pensions and retirement plans are locatable through either the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp.’s missing participant’s list or the National Registry of Unclaimed Retirement Benefit’s database. Once you locate the property, you must identify yourself and prove ownership.
